   Waiting alone in the humble comfort of old Veronica’s hovel, with the quite ebony scent of almond blossoms and frangipani wafting in from outside, the terrified Juliette thought once more of Senator Morgan, the only man she had ever really loved. He was now, according to the best salon gossip, marooned by his own crew on the Isle of Retribution.
   Just then, came a knock at the door, and she rose to face the inevitable. He was here! “Without you I am nothing, you who make my life complete!” he said.
   Only in this moment of extremity could it have happened that he went down on his knees and implored her to forgive him, and as the truth — the whole truth — slowly came home to her, she woke up. Incredibly enough, it had all been a dream.
