Subterranean Entanglements Beyond the Star

   Waiting alone in the now-familiar confines of Zachary’s grass hut, with the final aroma of fresh mulberry pies wafting in from outside, Adolph thought once more of Doctor Gordon, the sensitive genius who had known her in ways even she did not suspect. He was now, according to three independent witnesses, dancing away the hot Rio nights with the sultry Woodbein.
   Suddenly, came an abrupt fanfare from the long-silent trumpets, and she felt her heart suddenly beat with a new, wild rhythm. He was here! “There’s only ever been you, my giddy little goose!” he intoned.
   It was then that he slid the little ring onto her finger, and as he dabbed at her tears with the handkerchief she herself had made for him, she wondered if this would be a good time to remind him about the books he had borrowed.
